If your child's pediatrician has recommended a speech-language evaluation, or if you've been noticing some concerns about how your child communicates, scheduling that first appointment is a brave and loving step. It's also completely normal to feel a little nervous about it. Many parents come in wondering what will happen, what their child will be asked to do, and what the results might mean for their family. We want to take the mystery out of the process so you can walk through our doors feeling informed and at ease.
Before the Appointment: What to Bring
To help the evaluation go smoothly, it's helpful to gather a few things ahead of time. Bring any previous reports from your child's school, pediatrician, or other specialists, as well as your insurance card and any intake forms you've already completed. If your child has a favorite toy or comfort item, bring it along — familiar objects can help a child feel more relaxed in a new setting. Most importantly, bring your observations. You know your child better than anyone, and your insights about what you've noticed at home are genuinely valuable to our therapists.
What Happens During the Evaluation
Speech-language evaluations are designed to be child-friendly and low-pressure. Your therapist will likely spend time playing with your child, observing how they communicate naturally, and using age-appropriate games and activities to assess their skills. Depending on your child's age and concerns, the evaluation may look at vocabulary, sentence structure, articulation (how clearly they produce sounds), social communication, fluency, and voice. The therapist will also ask you questions about your child's developmental history, family background, and any specific concerns you've noticed. Most evaluations take between 60 and 90 minutes.
Understanding Your Child's Results
After the evaluation, your therapist will walk you through the findings in a clear, jargon-free way. They will explain what areas are developing as expected, where your child may need some extra support, and what a recommended plan of care might look like. If therapy is recommended, this is not a cause for alarm — it simply means your child can benefit from some targeted guidance. You'll have plenty of time to ask questions, and you should never leave an appointment feeling uncertain. Our team is here to make sure you feel like a confident, informed partner in your child's progress.
Taking that first step toward evaluation is one of the most important things you can do for your child's communication journey. If you're ready to schedule an evaluation or simply want to talk through your concerns first, we'd love to hear from you. Reach out to Speech Language Pros today — we're here to help your family every step of the way.
